Training for the Working Horse:
Richard has developed his own style of natural horsemanship. He uses a non-confrontational and non violent approach to training horses. He uses gentle and effective techniques to train the horse for work. He takes the time to build the trust and mutual respect of the horse to develop a good working relationship.
Richard will take in horses to train for work and driving. His speciality is the heavy horse but is happy to use his skills with any horse. They don’t have to be big to work.
Richard will also help with equine behavioural problems. He can assist with problems like bad loaders, difficult to catch, clipping, or if you have any other behavioural problem with your horse we will try to find a solution.
Training Courses and Heavy Horse Experience Days
Heavy Horse experience days are an introduction into working with heavy horses and are suitable for anybody over the age of 13. The day starts with an introduction, meet all our horses, learn how to care and groom them and then progress on to teaching how to control with plough lines and voice commands and in basic harness manoeuvre a horse about the farm, progressing onto full plough harness and pulling an implement. After lunch we teach you how to drive one of our horses in a cart.

“ a great day with such gentle giants”
Our training courses, 1 to 5 days duration, are designed to give participants a sound foundation to being able to work their own horses .or just to gain a deeper insight into the ways of the working horse. Course content is dependent on the requirements of the pupil, but could include working single and pairs or even a team of horses. We can cover traditional English plough and cart harnesses and selection of American and Scandinavian types. Farm work like harrowing, rolling and muckspreading to driving carts, wagons can all be covered.

Timber Extraction, forestry, conservation and sensitive land management.
Richard is a professional horse logger and has been using horses in forestry for 20 years. He offers a full range of timber extraction services using heavy horses – from coppice to large oak butts and including softwood extraction.
Using horses rather than machines offers a wide range of advantages including –
- Lower carbon footprint – horses are effectively carbon neutral
- Lower cost in getting horses to site
- Horses can get to places where machines cannot, especially in wet ground and conditions
- Minimal disturbance of flora and fauna
- Horses are lighter than most machines and cause no ground compaction
- More selective thinning is possible – resulting in more subtle and effective long-term woodland management
- Especially good for conservation work
- Much more efficient on short extraction work
- Can be combined with machinery. e.g. using a horse to drag logs to a ride where they can be collected or processed by machines
Swainsford Heavy Horses also undertake conservation work, from bracken bashing, grassland management (harrowing, rolling), wildflower hay meadows, scarification to encourage natural regeneration in woodland, stream and river bed harrowing.
We are fully insured and NPTC Certified
